East is a noun, adjective, or adverb indicating direction or geography. East is one of the four cardinal directions or compass points. It is the opposite of west and is perpendicular to north and south.
Etymology
The word east comes from Middle English est, from Old English ēast, which itself comes from the Proto-Germanic *aus-to- or *austra- "east, toward the sunrise", from Proto-Indo-European *aus- "to shine," or "dawn". This is similar to Old High German *ōstar "to the east", Latin aurora "dawn", and Greek ēōs or heōs.Ēostre, a Germanic goddess of dawn, might have been a personification of both dawn and the cardinal points.
Navigation
By convention, the right hand side of a map is east. This convention has developed from the use of a compass, which places north at the top.
To go east using a compass for navigation, set a bearing or azimuth of 90°.
Cultural
East is the direction toward which the Earth rotates about its axis, and therefore the general direction from which the Sun appears to rise. The practice of praying towards the East is older than Christianity, but has been adopted by this religion as the Orient was thought of as containing mankind's original home. Hence, most Christian churches are oriented towards the east.

Offshore (novel)
Offshore (1979) is a novel by Penelope Fitzgerald. It won the Booker Prize for that year. It recalls her time spent on boats on the Thames in Battersea. The novel explores the liminality of people who do not belong to the land or the sea, but are somewhere in between. The epigraph, "che mena il vento, e che batte la pioggia, e che s'incontran con si aspre lingue" ("whom the wind drives, or whom the rain beats, or those who clash with such bitter tongues") comes from Canto XI of Dante's Inferno.

In September 2021, the final V164-9.5 MW turbine was installed at the 950 MW Moray East project in Scotland. On behalf of OW Ocean Winds and our partners in the installation process such as Fred Olsen Windcarrier, we're proud to have delivered and installed 100 turbines at Scotland's largest renewable energy project to date. Offshore wind projects aren't killing whales along the East Coast, report claims
In a new report, the Marine Mammal Commission says that offshore wind projects along the U.S. East Coast are not killing whales, despite the 16 that have died and washed ashore on coastal beaches this winter. Both Humpback whales and endangered North Atlantic Right Whales have died on the East Coast in the last few months, including two right here in Virginia Beach. The commission says there's no evidence linking the deaths to offshore wind development, and that the deaths are part of an "unusual mortality event" delcared back in 2016. In a new report, the Marine Mammal Commission says that offshore wind projects along the U.S. East Coast are not killing whales, despite the 16 that have died and washed ashore on coastal beaches this winter.
Both Humpback whales and endangered North Atlantic Right Whales have died on the East Coast in the last few months, including two right here in Virginia Beach. The commission says there's no evidence linking the deaths to offshore wind development, and that the deaths are part of an "unusual mortality event" delcared back in 2016.

In September 2021, the final V164-9.5 MW turbine was installed at the 950 MW Moray East project in Scotland. On behalf of OW Ocean Winds and our partners in the installation process such as Fred Olsen Windcarrier, we're proud to have delivered and installed 100 turbines at Scotland's largest renewable energy project to date.
The project is due to be fully commissioned in 2022, and once finalised, will generate enough clean electricity to power the equivalent of around 950,000 UK homes.

Etymology
The word east comes from Middle English est, from Old English ēast, which itself comes from the Proto-Germanic *aus-to- or *austra- "east, toward the sunrise", from Proto-Indo-European *aus- "to shine," or "dawn". This is similar to Old High German *ōstar "to the east", Latin aurora "dawn", and Greek ēōs or heōs.Ēostre, a Germanic goddess of dawn, might have been a personification of both dawn and the cardinal points.
Navigation
By convention, the right hand side of a map is east. This convention has developed from the use of a compass, which places north at the top.
To go east using a compass for navigation, set a bearing or azimuth of 90°.
Cultural
East is the direction toward which the Earth rotates about its axis, and therefore the general direction from which the Sun appears to rise. The practice of praying towards the East is older than Christianity, but has been adopted by this religion as the Orient was thought of as containing mankind's original home. Hence, most Christian churches are oriented towards the east.
